Top 5 Day Trips from Greenville, SC: Explore Scenic Spots in North and South Carolina

August 31, 2024

Greenville, SC, may be a traveler’s paradise, but that doesn’t mean that the adventures need to stop there. If you have the opportunity, I highly encourage you to check out Greenville’s neighboring cities, as they make for exciting day trips. From mountain cities like Asheville, NC, to industrial cities like Spartanburg, SC, there are plenty of activities to keep you busy for hours. These cities offer contrasting aesthetics from Greenville, like mountain views and small town vibes. But they have a lot in common, too, like excellent restaurants, chill coffee shops, insightful museums, and unique hiking trails. Check out our list of the five best day trips from Greenville, SC; you never know what kind of adventures are right around the corner.

Skyline of Asheville, SC
  1. Asheville, NC

First on the list is breathtaking Asheville, NC. My husband and I come here every year on our anniversary for the mountain views and local restaurants. When you visit downtown, you begin to understand that Asheville is proud of its artsy and eclectic vibe; after all, Asheville’s slogan is “Keep Asheville Weird.” Scattered around the city are many art museums and galleries, street performers, and local gift shops.

  • Distance from Greenville: 1 hour, 15 min
  • Must-See: Biltmore Estate, Blue Ridge Parkway, Botanical Gardens
  • Outdoor Activity: DuPont State Forest, Chimney RockState Park
  • Restaurant Highlights: The Moose Cafe, Omni Grove Park Inn
Looking Glass Falls

2. Brevard, NC

Next up on the list is Brevard, also known as the “Land of Waterfalls.” With more than 250 waterfalls, there are so many nature outings to choose from. My favorite spots to visit are Looking Glass Falls and the Sliding Rock, which is a legit natural rock waterslide! Brevard is perfect for those who love the outdoors, but those who prefer the comforts of the city can enjoy one of their many breweries. Brevard’s downtown is charming, complete with mountain style architecture and several local bakeries.

  • Distance from Greenville: 1 hour, 15 min
  • Must-See: Forest National Scenic Byway, Looking Glass Falls
  • Outdoor Activity: Pisgah National Forest, Sliding Rock,

3. Henderson, NC

Hendersonville is smaller than Asheville or Brevard, and is known for its pedestrian friendly downtown. It is a historic town that has many worthwhile museums like the Henderson County Heritage Museum. But the main attraction to Hendersonville? Apples! There are more than 20 apple orchards/farms in this area. They are known for their annual Apple Festival, which is actually happening this weekend from August 30th-September 2nd.

  • Distance from Greenville: 1 hour
  • Must-See: Blue Ridge Parkway, Carl Sandburg Historic Site
  • Outdoor Activity: Bearwallow Mountain, Buffalo Creek Park, Jump Off Rock
  • Restaurant Highlights: Flat Rock Wood Room
Leopard Forest Company at TR

4. Travelers Rest, SC

Traveler’s Rest, or TR for short, is hopping. It seems like they always have an event going on downtown, whether it's a concert, farmer’s market, or movie night. TR exudes Southern charm and is great for walking, running, and biking, especially on the Swamp Rabbit Trail. Their restaurants are quaint, too; check em out!

  • Distance from Greenville: 20 minutes
  • Must-See: Browse and Stroll Art on the Trail,
  • Outdoor Activity: Swamp Rabbit Trail, Trailblazer Park
  • Restaurant Highlights: Farmhouse Tacos, Tandem Crepe and Coffeehouse
Skyline of Spartanburg, SC

5. Spartanburg, SC

Spartanburg is a historical city in the Upstate that has a variety of museums, state parks, restaurants, and shops. “Hub City” used to be a railroad center, and is now a social center that celebrates unity and diversity. There’s always something to do in Spartanburg, and even more so now that they are getting their very own baseball team!

You don't need to travel far from Greenville for exciting adventures in neighboring cities. Whether you are checking out the mountain views in North Carolina or the industrial Upstate views in South Carolina, there's no lack of things to see. Sample from charming dessert cafes or find your new favorite Farm to Table restaurant. Drive the Blue Ridge Parkway or run the Swamp Rabbit Trail; you won't regret getting out into the Carolinas and exploring all it has to offer.
