Check out The Local 5

Whether you’re visiting for the first time or have spent years in the Greenville area, The Local 5 Newsletter is your one stop destination to find out what you don’t want to miss this weekend in the Upstate.

Every Thursday, we will highlight our ‘top 5 musts’ that will include everything from restaurants, activities, parks, concerts and festivals that are all right here in beautiful Greenville, SC.

One

Over 115,000 participants will be gathering in downtown Spartanburg this weekend for Spring Fling, the largest street festival in the Upstate. Four stages will be filled for nonstop entertainment, such as “The Art of Hip Hop,” “Traditional West African Dance,” "Reptile Showcase,” “Kenny the Clown,” and more. Enjoy attractions like the SHRS cycling race, Carolina Classic Car show, and Craft Beer experience. Shop for local handcrafted treasures from nearly 50 local vendors, and/or learn about small businesses in the area. Check out the Family Fun Zone for children-sized amusement park rides, $1 per ticket. There’s something for everyone at Spring Fling!

Two

When you’re a child, “All the world is made of faith, and trust, and pixie dust” (J. M. Barrie), and anything is possible. Recapture that magic via the hit Broadway musical, Peter Pan, this weekend at the Peace Center. It features the Darling children and their visit from a magical, flying boy, who takes them on a thrilling journey into the heart of Neverland. This new adaptation is brought to life by playwright Larissa FastHorse, director Lonny Price, and choreographer Lorin Latarro. Classic songs include “I’m Flying,” “I Gotta Crow,” and “I Won’t Grow Up.” Tickets start at $45. Peter Pan knows that it’s never too late to believe in yourself… or in fairies.

Three

Nothing rejuvenates a room quite like a fresh, colorful bouquet of roses. At Piedmont’s Plant and Flower Festival, it is more exciting than ever to shop for starter plants and freshly cut flowers. Shop from over 30 vendors for produce and handmade items. Carpooling to the Greenville State Farmers Market is encouraged. This is a free community event, so come on out, and let the good times bloom.

Four

Since the early 2000s, we have been forced to ponder the classic rock and roll question, “Who let the dogs out?” and now we finally have an answer: it was Papa Johns! This year, Papa John’s is hosting a two mile walk/run fundraiser throughout downtown Greenville, and all pups are invited to join. After the race, check out the Mutt Market and after party on South Main Street. Enjoy live entertainment, free Papa John's pizza, face painting, and paw-some giveaways. Tickets start at $40, although discounts are available for individuals under 12 and above 65. All proceeds benefit the Greenville Humane Society. It’s fetching to be the best doggone day of the week!

Camperdown Plaza is Greenville’s favorite local spot for spontaneous events, especially the Pop Up Market. Check out Camperdown Plaza this Sunday from 12-4pm for a Spring celebration, including live music from Nate the Chief and free face painting from Ashley @ GVL Art. Leashed pets are welcome!
