Out of the Hills: The Birth of Country Music traces the history of country music from 1920 to 1980 with an emphasis on the development of Bluegrass and southeastern country music. The exhibit features “A Cardboard History of Blue Ridge Music,” a vintage collection of country music posters from collector Tom Murphy, covering acts from the 1950s to the 1980s. Out of the Hills marks the first collaboration between the Sigal Music Museum and the Earl Scruggs Center in Shelby, NC. Several of Scruggs’ items are on display, helping to tell the story of The Grand Ole Opry, Bill Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs, and many more. As with past exhibits, Out of the Hills also features dozens of musical instruments from the Sigal Collection, including vintage banjos, guitars, mandolins, and recordings. Another exciting feature is Marty Robbins’ ca 1952 Epiphone Zenith guitar, used on the famous recording of “El Paso.” The exhibit runs through October 13, 2023.
Every week, you and your young learners will listen to a new book read aloud in the Dream Theater. Story Time & More includes other activities, dancing, and fun - and is free with the price of admission.
