LOVE AN INSIDE SCOOP?
Check out The Local 5
Whether you’re visiting for the first time or have spent years in the Greenville area, The Local 5 Newsletter is your one stop destination to find out what you don’t want to miss this weekend in the Upstate.
Every Thursday, we will highlight our ‘top 5 musts’ that will include everything from restaurants, activities, parks, concerts and festivals that are all right here in beautiful Greenville, SC.
This weekend, we remember that “Freedom is not free” as we honor our veterans at Greer’s annual Freedom Blast. The evening’s military tribute will include the posting of the colors, national anthem, pledge of allegiance, prayer, and more, in order to recognize the extraordinary bravery of our military’s men and women. Additionally, the Freedom Fest will host a Kids Zone, Blood Drive, rib eating contest, and live music from the Jake Bartley Band. Check out the local cuisine and beer from on site vendors and food trucks. At 10pm, the night sky will light up in a dazzling display of fireworks. It’s a summer celebration like no other.
Feel like an "All Star" at Smash Mouth’s free concert this weekend in Simpsonville. Join this year’s Simply Freedom Fest for a music extravaganza including DJ Sha, Gyth Rigdon, and of course, the Grammy nominated sensation Smash Mouth. The gates open at 5:30, and because parking is limited, it is recommended to arrive early to reserve your spot. There is a clear bag policy; chairs, diaper bags, and strollers are all permitted. Be sure to stay until the end because the evening will conclude with a spectacular firework show. Feel free to dress in red, white, and blue. Let’s go, U.S.A!
You don’t need to be a sports fanatic to enjoy a Greenville Drive baseball game. People of all ages can enjoy the show, sample sweet treats, and walk the premises of the diamond. Join June 25th-30th for special promotion nights, including “Engineering Night,” “Scooby Doo Night,” “Fitness Night,” and more, as our local Greenville Drive faces off against the Hickory Crawdads. Additionally, Friday night’s game will conclude with a special fireworks show, and Saturday’s pre-game celebration will include face painting, inflatables, food trucks, and shopping at District 356. Tickets start at $9, a steal!
Unwind from Monday stress by participating in Monday Night Yoga. Instructor Abbey Garcia will lead you through a series of stretches that encourage balance and breathing in the midst of a busy city. Stretch under an open sky at Camperdown Plaza, and connect with others in the heart of downtown. This free weekly series is from 6:30-7:30pm, and just may be needed after a week of noisy fireworks. Your body will thank you!
It’s important to enjoy the little moments, because “Beautiful things never last. Not roses, nor snow… and not fireworks, either” (Jennifer Donnelly). If you’re looking to be in the moment next week, you may want to check out Clemson MBA Fireworks on the Fourth. Every year, Unity Park hosts this show, and it never disappoints. Live entertainment will include Soul Intent Band, Honor Guard, and 246 Army Band. Food trucks like “The Noodle Lady” and “THE Snickering Coyote” will be selling their refreshments, so come hungry. Or, pack a picnic basket and chairs, to stay on the simple side. It’s recommended to arrive early because free parking fills up fast. Happy Independence Day.
